<cynical>So, let me get this right; you're going to pay £23 to ride on roads local to yourself, upon which you can ride any other time you want, stop at a feed station to fill yourself up with processed food (flapjacks, jaffa cakes and fig rolls), rehydrate with an energy drink which has a similar look and taste to that of the cooling water used in Chernobyl (the volunteers tend to make it up to a 43% carb mix), and then cross the finish line to be handed a piece of cheap Chinese tin being described as a medal?</cynical>

What's not to like about it...?

Not sure about bens motivations but for me:
- when I've signed up, it's on the calendar and then it's my time, cleared.
- despite living here for over four years I've literally been out a handful of times on my bike, because I don't really know the roads (my life is based with a 5 mile circle, or motorways)
- I generally am not confident cycling on roads anymore. So feel safety in numbers...

Jaffa cakes & fig rolls... there you have it!
Actually, it's quite nice occasionally to have someone else go to the trouble of planning a route for you (though as I get more and more familiar with finding my way around the home counties countryside, I am perhaps less inclined to do local sportives)

That would be great, but it's marathon day, which means I won't be able to get there due to road closures. Boooooo. Might double check the road closure times
