Heckington 10mile

1/5

28 July, two loops, flat. It’s part of the Heckington Show but organised by Sleaford striders. Before doing the report on the run, have to say by a country mile the most engaging and supportive marshalls I have ever seen. Very well organised except for a small faux pas.....instead of doing two laps of the show ground we only did one so overall distance was short by .13 miles. Somewhat frustrating, done this race twice in four years and short both times.

Build up to the race pretty good, had decent mileage in the last few months and been doing some intensity work to find out if I could find my absent pace! My 2015 time adjusted for short distance was 1.10. Target was to go under that....the more the better. 1.05 unrealistic but 1.07 an outside chance.

Race day, weather conspiring against us, 20mile and hour wind forecast at start and 40mph after an hour. That turned out to be accurate. Oh well. Same for everyone and probably better for everyone from a health perspective that it wasn’t 30 degrees plus. Target adjusted to anything under 1.10.

So first mile jostling whilst everyone sorted pace out...6.45, out into the fens all flat and a nice following breeze, 6.37 for second mile. Out to turnaround point mile 3 done in 6.43. So at this point I am feeling good, but as we had been changing direction a bit had come across severe cross winds, I was on my own as a small pack in front was going a bit too fast for me to tuck into, knowing a headwind was coming there wasn’t much I could do. Adjusted pace expectations, into headwind mile 4 in 7.02. Mile 5 back near the start 7.12. So halfway and I calculate I am about 40 seconds up on target. This feels about right to me, back out with the wind following 6.52, mile 7 in 6.49. So three miles left feeling good and nearly a minute up on target.Next two miles into the wind 7.00 and 7.03. Whilst tired am feeling strong, one person ahead I have been reeling in for last few miles and she is now flagging and closing on her. Last mile into the village, into the show ground giving it full beans over the line, the last .87 mile in 6.00.

Overall time 1.08.03, ag 3/18, overall 33/242

Very pleased. Good guide on pace for upcoming halves. :D :D

Wow, great pacing, particularly in such taxing conditions. Great result too, well done, looking forward to reading about your forthcoming halfs, bloody well done Jimba.

In order to attract new members, just maintaining the front, that this is a serious club that’s going places.
