Walking (Running) Home for Christmas

Postby Seasider71 » 28 Jul 2016 12:10

Ok, so as some of you may or may not know, at the start of this year I was struggling to walk properly due to a back injury - Fast forward 7 months and thanks to a lot of support from work, providing me with a vari desk and orthapedic chair and also weight watchers for helping me lose some of my timber (still ongoing) I find myself in a place where I can finally take on the challenge that I wanted to do last year.

As you may know, my ultimate ambition is to take on the Arch to Arc challenge, but I need to be in a place where my fitness allows me to even consider it - hence my foray now into Ultra distances, if all goes well I may consider the Double Iron at Avon Tyrell in May (brrrrrr chilly swim).

On 16th December 2016 I will be taking part in a charity event called Walking Home for Christmas - it encourgages people to walk home from work one day, instead of the car / bike / bus /train etc... the charity is for Walking with the Wounded. I lost a couple of friends in the recent conflicts, which has made me want to help those that made it home with bits missing, both physically & mentally.

So I live in Sheffield, and work in Derby - My drive to work is 40miles, but I can't see me being allowed to run up the M1, so I will be using pavement & trail to make my way home, bearing in mind this will be in December, I am hoping that there will be a lack of snow. The route that I have surveyed via Garmin Connect shows the distance to be approx 65km so pretty much the same as my drive, the only downside is that Sheffield is uphill from Derby.....lol

So although this is officially Week 1/21 of my training programme - I actually did some pre-training in the 3 weeks leading up to this week - I basically ran the first week of the plan for 3 weeks. I will endeavour to keep you updated on a weekly basis with the training, so that anyone interested in doing something similar can see what I have to go through.

All runs are done at an easy pace, as speed needs to go out of the window.

Week 5/21

As I have now decided to do the Double Iron distance next year, I now need to incorporate some bike & swim sessions into my run programme to ensure I am at decent standard when i toe the start line, so some of the planned sessions will have to get mixed up to incorporate multi sport.

Week 7/21

Base phase completed, now moving onto Build Phase

First injury has struck, totally ruined my toe on my last LD run, practically the whole of the top of my toe has removed itself, and the nail is just about hanging on, it is very painful just to walk on it at the moment, so hoping that the damage gets repaired quickly. To make up for my disappointment I have ordered myself a new pair of trainers - gone for the Hoka One One range again, with the Clifton Road 3 Model. I have gone a size up to try and prevent this type of injury re-occuring, also the new model is supposed to have a larger toe box which will not compress my plates as much.

Mon 8km Run Easy Pace = Injured
Tues Strength Training = 20mins in a fashon, unable to do lunges on left foot.
Wed 8km Hilly Run = Resting foot
Thu Strength Training = Missed session
Fri Rest Day
Sat 2hr 30min Run Steady Pace = Resting foot
Sun 2-4km Walk =

Week 8/21

So last week was pretty much a washout, all due to the almost de-gloving of my little toe, which is hopefully now ok to run on again.

Had to work away from home this week, which throws a spanner in the works for getting out for a run, purely because I have no idea of any good routes in Bristol, and I am pretty much in the city centre - so the Treadmill is the main option.

New trainers have arrived, so first test of them will be on Monday.

Mon 8km Run Easy Pace = 10km on treadmill (58mins)
Tues Strength Training = 10km on treadmill (58mins)
Wed 8km Hilly Run = Rest (due to being knackered after a day at work then the long drive back to the North)
Thu Strength Training = Missed Session
Fri Rest Day
Sat 2hr 30min Run Steady Pace = Ended up being a 3hr Run 27km @ 6:35 pace - Introduced walking the uphills and running the rest, the last 5km killed me, but looking at the pace it was too fast, I was aiming for an average of 7:00.
Sun 2-4km Walk = 3km walk

Running Distances to Date
Week 1 21km

Week 3 30km

Week 9/21

Well life has truly got in the way of training this week - it has been a total washout, due to work commitments and looks like it will be the same for the next fortnight too - the main reason is that I am getting home late from work and just too knackred to get off my ass and run - the WAT was at the hospital on Satruday so that knocked my long run on the head also - so i have convinced myself that this week was a pure rest week and that it would only do me good.

However I am now on a full 12 days at work, so the long run next weekend will be knocked on the head too, as they will be 12hr shifts, so I intend to do some shuffling about with the schedule.

Mon 8km Run Easy Pace = Legs said NO, so switched to a Strength training session instead
Tues Strength Training = Fail / Rest
Wed 8km Hilly Run = Fail / Rest
Thu Strength Training = Fail / Rest
Fri Rest Day = Rest :D
Sat 3hr Run Slow Pace = Fail / Rest
Sun 2-4km Walk = 3km Walk

Running Distances to Date
Week 1 21km
Week 2 24km
Week 3 30km
Week 4 18km
Week 5 30km
Week 6 43km
Week 7 0km
Week 8 47km
Week 9 Rest
