Short & long cage rear mechs

Postby Bendy Ben » 24 Sep 2015 11:15

Need to change my ultegra rear mech on my TT bike at some point

I run a 10 speed 6800 grey groupset

What's the difference between short & long cage please ?

Both will work I'm assuming………

Think the bike came with a funny rear mech
It's "long"

Need recabling too so thought I might as well do it all at the same time

Thanks

Long cage is for supporting bigger ranges on the cassette, so you'd typically find it on a road bike in the Alps, than on a TT bike.

Cheers Ian

And change that skanky inner cable while you're at it. In fact, change all the cables. And buy yourself some cable end nipples.

Tsk. ;)
I had fun once. It was awful.

I *think* the normal ultegra cage supports up to 28 teeth which should be more than enough for the normal range of conditions you might experience on a TT bike. If you are doing a long hilly tri (IM wales for example) then you may want more of a 'road' type gearing to avoid having to mash the hills, but at 31.8gear inches, 34/28 should be spinny enough for almost any climb you are going to encounter.

Don't forget there's the 'steep and iconic' Box Hill that Bendy has to get up

lol... Box hill... lol...

34/28 is easier than the 'reference gear' at Hell of the Worth...

(I've never actually used the reference gear... 34/28 FTW :-) )

Having lost count of the number of bikes you have, does your XC bike ( if you still have not/sold/swopped/lost it )have a short or medium cage and just swop it over?
Unless they are not compatible?
Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception.
