You learn something new every day... I hadn't realised the small ring on standard compact cross chain sets was larger than the small ring on a standard road chain set. seems counter intuitive to me.

Still, no-one is going to get me apologising about my gearing :-)

Ewan also had a large cassette too, although not sure it went all the way up to 30.

Oi... don't drag me into this... What were your chainrings? ;-)

I had the same as Chappers - 34X28. Oh but my £5 cables kept on working :-D

Ooh, you b1tch

I beilve that Ian would have been riding an equivalent 34/27 give or take a little bit. So performed better than most of us, but last year must have been epic as equilebt would have been more like 34/24
Thinks to much about it all

Yep, it's surprised me somewhat. I didn't realise there was that big (or any of) a difference between a CX chainset and a normal compact.

A standard double (52/39) with a 28 cassette would have been easier than last year's setup.

I could loan somebody my old Halfords bike for next year: 48/34 at the front and 13-30 at the back. The 34/30 combo should let you climb walls.
I had fun once. It was awful.

I sort of do... I just never checked what chainset the CX bike was running.
