Which cassette?

Postby CCS » 11 Oct 2013 13:35

Today's dumb question (and I do apologise for the endless stream that seem to be clogging up this section)...

What cassette would people recommend for pure TT-ing purposes? Mainly flat courses...
I currently run an 11-28 on both sets of wheels - since that is what I need on the road bike (with a compact) to get around the Surrey hills, and my race wheels originally belonged to the road bike.
The TT is a standard double, so will never be taken into the hills, as my legs simply aren't strong enough to climb with that gearing. There may have recently been a small retail accident, which necessitates the purchase of another cassette... do I just get the same (though this wheel is for race purposes only, and will never go on the road bike) - after all, it never hurts to have spare gears... or are people secretly laughing at me for turning up at TTs with a gears the size of a dinner plate?

I use an 11-25 and as you know my climbing isn't all that. I have no climbing related issues.

On another note, you've just ruined my week. but well done, you will notice the difference.

12-25

An 11 is mainly for compacts, so go for a 12, unless you plan to be riding at 60+kph on the flat!
25 would let you spin uphill if it drags for a wheel. A 23 might do and give you nice close ratios to find the perfect gear.

Although I would add that I don't ride a standard double. When choosing the cassette for my race wheels I opted for an 11-25 instead of my normal 11-28 as I should never need to use a 28 in a normal race. If the course needs a 28, I won't be using those wheels anyway!

12-25 or 12-23, depending on what sort of rider you are (cadence, power) and what sort of courses you are likely to be riding. if you are riding 11-28 at the moment and only using the larger chainring then for a flat-ish tt you are unlikely to find anything that you can't climb in 39/23 with a bit of oomph.

if you are using a 23 then just remember to swap the cassette over when you switch to a less flat route.

A C-60 with 1980's power ballads, assuming you're doing a 25? ;)

Dependant on cadence. Bearing in mind this is for TT's where you don't need to save you legs for the run, you can get away with lower cadence / higher gear, if that is your preference.

Also reaching that kind of speed is entirely possible on slight downhills.

I'd rather have it than not.

The problem with the C-60, was you couldn't put two albums on it, it had to be a C-90,, if you used a C-60 it was one album and two much empty tape.

But in the words of Bowwowwow.

11-21. 11-23 12-23 or 12-25 is probably the range you want.

Do you remember what the highest ans lowest you used were?

Actually, I'm going to have a look at your strava files... But I don't think you measure cadence...
