Essential tools?

Postby Woody » 23 Sep 2013 17:36

I just wondered what tools people consider to be essential in their toolbox? Or rather, in what order would people buy tools in order to build up a solid tool kit over time?

I've got myself a chain whip and Cassette removal tool but as I have a gift voucher for Evans I was thinking of buying my next tool...but which one, I'm not decided? I don't 'need' anything as yet but it'd be interesting to know what people see as useful or essential tools to have?

Decent 5 & 6mm allen wrenches.

There's a list from BTown of essential tools in one of the club mags.

Decent cable cutters. Bike specific so they have the tool to reshape the outer after it has been cut.
Decent chain splitter
Decent 2.5,3,4,5,6 mm allen keys
Pedal spanner
Torque wrenches (5-25Nm & 20-100Nm)

Get the Park Tools "Blue Book". Lots of good advice in there.

Start off with the tools that you need to do the every day jobs (i.e. the ones you might do every couple of years) - Allen Keys, spanners to start with.

Gradually add the more specialist ones as you need - Cassette socket/chain wrench etc. All based on how often you need them, or, when you need them.

Don't suppose you know where?

I guess cable cutters are next then? Although, don't think I've EVER needed them in the past? I'm off to google park tools blue book! ;)

issue 3 i'm pretty sure. (there is a list of what is in each issue along with the link on the forum somewhere).

i think jibbs has it about right. some decent grease/lubricant (now now, kev) and maybe some copper grease for bolt threads.

Electrical tape,
Speed or botch tape,
WD40
Some form of stabbing implement,

Remember, never clean the bike, the dirt or grime will hold together and lubricate most parts, once you start fettling with the bike, just have these words in you head.
" why are you messing with something, if it isn't broken "
Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception.

Like a misericorde or a tanto, for when your bike drives you to the wall? (don't get any silly ideas Bopo) ;-)

I've found the tool box from Aldi surprisingly useful, actually. Includes quite a few things you wouldn't normally have in your housework toolbox. On sale this Thursday.

What's the quality like Artur? I'm happy to build up slowly and ensure good quality tools....buy cheap, buy twice?
