Mirrored goggles...

Postby CCS » 05 Jun 2013 13:25

... why, oh why, oh why do ALL my pairs of mirrored goggles fog up?
Doesn't matter whether I am in the pool or OW - after about 200m, they are always totally fogged up. Tried old goggles; bought new ones (rather fetching blue mirror lens) - tried anti fog solution (admittedly a few years old - does it go off?) - all to no avail!
Any top tips?
I definitely find them better for a sunny early morning race (optimistically thinking Windsor) - but not a great deal of use if I can't see where I am going!

The reason for the fogging is probably due to the contrast between the water temp and the air temp in the goggles.
You were worried about fogging of the visor, this is sorted by the movement of air creating a similar temp between the air in front and behind.
You say your Oakleys steam up, again due to the difference in temp, the glasses being very close to the face so restricting the movement.

Basically, like myself, you generate a heat ( mention exercise and I over heat), more than others, so as the swimming glasses are sealed the air cannot circulate and as you slice through the water the fogging occurs.
Fogging is inevitable, so you just need to slow down its effects.

You can go to the local Diving shop and acquire some anti fogging solution, this is better than the standard pool/swimming stuff.

Or,
You get a piece of kitchen towel, put a very small amount of washing up liquid on it and slowly rub the inside of the goggles until it has stopped smearing. If you don't rub it all in, you may end up with suds when swimming.

Yes, tried that too (sorry Kevy)
It's very odd - same brand / style as my other goggles, but the ones with yellow lenses never fog up... wonder whether the mirroring causes some sort of issue with temperatures inside & out equalising (over to the physics crew...)

Odd though that I only get it with those lenses, and then both in pool or outdoors... perhaps I just have a horrible sweaty face?

Mirrored lenses may have better heat insulation properties so it only happens with those lenses, maybe, rather than mirrored, you use dark smoked lenses.
