Cassette removal

Postby CCS » 31 Mar 2011 09:48

OK, so I am probably being stupid...but....

I am trying to change over cassettes from one set of wheels to the other. I have the tools (dammit, I have even removed a cassette before) - but can I actually get the cassette off? :?
Any top tips?
How much force should I need to apply?
Do I need anything different for a SRAM cassette (I am presuming not, as it is Shimano compatible).

Any advice gratefully received... at the moment, there are 2 bikes,a spare wheel and all my tools sitting in the front hallway, and the BAT officer is starting to make muttering noises!

Could require a lot of force, if it has tightened up - which with all your sufferfesting, it probably has.

Get the BAT officer to have a go, at least you can laugh at him then.

If I remember correctly you need a lock ring, spanner and a chainwhip.
Remove skewer and fit lock ring in position.
Place chainwhip on cassette.
Put spanner on lock ring.
Apply anti clockwise pressure on spanner and clockwise pressure on chainwhip.
Of course I could be completely wrong.

it can take quite a bit of force, don't be afraid to give it some elbow. it might seem like a bit safety first but i've taken to wearing gloves when taking my cassettes off, as i don't fancy a slip that means i smack my hand on a cassette.

Thanks to all... brute force was indeed what was required (always a bit nervous of doing this without checking first... don't want to break stuff!).
Now just need to get cassette onto the new wheel and have a bit of a test ride tomorrow, and I declare myself ready (or as ready as I will ever be) for the weekend's sportive!

If you think about it, you are using your mahoosive quads and glutes to tighten it, but your spindly little front crawl flappers, plus a bit of a lever, to undo it.
