How did you dismantle it - did you take the rear mech off at the hanger using the two little screws or did you take off from the single bolt to the frame?

It sounds like its not fully tightened so when a huge load is applied the mech is moving and when the load is not there then the mech settles back in.

Single bolt to the frame. I'll need to check it out, but needs to wait till tomorrow. May well be the case.

An update on this: couldn't replicate on turbo, but swapped chain around (it did look like it was installed inside out) and the problem is gone. Did 90k on the bike yesterday, no sign of any jumping etc.

Some chains have a direction - I know the dura ace does!
