2015 Handicap competition?

2015 Handicap competition?

Postby Jack Hughes » 15 Sep 2014 16:06

Thinking about this:

Club wide, across all events.

IanM is scratch, everyone else has a handicap based on this years performances, or what the TT-gods indicate is a likely performance for those without a time. And we see what happens.

Standard handicap competition, worked example:

IanM's best is 55:38, mine is 01:05:26, so my handicap is the difference between the two, which is 09:48 (IanM's handicap would be 0:00:00 - difference between his best and the best (which is his best) :D).

If, for the sake of example, IanM's best is is 55:00, and mine is 58:00, our handicap times would be:

IanM: 55:00 - 0:00:00 = 55:00
JH: 58:00 - 09:48 = 48:12

So I would win?

No, you don't need it. It is really about how you do relative to Ian, which has nothing to do with either of your gender. And by extension, how everyone else does. Which is why it is fun.

The problem is working out a handicap for people who haven't done anything.

There are two ways you can beat IanM (and everyone else)

1) Improve a lot
2) Ride a fast course (no one apart from IanM and me could be considered to have done that this year). Of course, you have to work out how to get in to events on fast courses. Being female helps with that.

No way. You're too fast form most boys around here. ;-)

I'm in too - been thinking of a Tri version of this too for next season as part of my brand-new-SGM-organisational-extravaganza, so stand by...

Not necessarily. Your 10 mile 25 mile times (and possibly your 50 if you can be bothered to do that) are in.

Otherwise, we would use Creg's 50 for the 50 (and Mr Tambly's 100 for the 100). Or CCS's 50. or something.

It's just easiest to handicap against the fastest, rather than some arbitrary point.

The thing to understand about CTT events, unlike other sports, is that they attempt (i.e. you can never do it exactly), to be as comparable as possible, so that the courses have certain rules:

1) Must be properly measured
2) Start and finish must be closely located (within about 10% or something).
3) Tend to be as flat as possible, don't have traffic lights, or right turns etc. etc.

There is still a huge amount of variation, but nothing like what you get in Running races, and tris (which don't have to be specific distances, have all sorts of hills and obstacles, etc. etc).

There are relatively few courses, and they get used over and over again, so you can get a chance to ride them, and in a variety of conditions. So it is easy to shop around for the best course etc. etc. and ride them a few times.

So for it to even get close to working in a tri, you would probably need to have people in the same event - so it might work for, say, the relays....

It would work for track athletics, mind. (and track cycling).

It won't be exactly the same, but the attempt will be to "objectivise" people's results as far as they could be. Still mulling things over, so stand by...
