We're planning to drive there next year after this year's flights/car hire fiasco.

That will be a looooong drive. Only done it once since we moved to the UK and we did it with a stopover in Belgium (we were going about 3hrs further into the country). Admittedly we did it in winter time, so it was a fair bit slower, but you're still looking at at least 14 hours - counting from London area.

It shouldn't be too bad - we drove to Salzburg in one hit a few ago. We'll stop off I'm Germany on the way out at least
