Southwell Last Minute Sprint

Postby Jimba » 14 Oct 2015 19:27

Where: Southwell
When: 20Sept 2015
Organiser: One stepbeyond
Course: pool swim, out and back undulating bike, hilly run
Distances: 400m swim, 17.5k bike, 4.6k run
Marshalling: good at key junctions
Facilities: food, drink etc
Freebies: technical t

Bit late posting this and keeping up to date with everyone else.
Done this course 8/9 times at least. Pb 1.04.51 from 2 years ago. Done loads of run training but a bit light to say the least on swimming and fairly low on cycling.

Swim I felt good, sadly lane full of breast strikers, people who refuse to give way at end of lanes, people who you give way to and then promptly stop 5m after pushing off etc etc. Long run to transition so time 10.34, I had my actual swim time as 9.30 or so, so I am reasonably happy with that all things considered.
T1 57secs, so happy.
Bike - pushed hard from outset but kind of knew it wasn't going to be great after first few miles. Overtook quite a few, round the turnaround point and pushed for home. Decided not to take feet out for dismount. 33.08, pb is 31.40 so given training can't be too disappointed.
T2 1.06 longer than t1 which is unusual, not helped by being told to turn round my bike on re-racking, never had that happen before, I didn't think it mattered coming back in which way round it went.
Run felt relatively good, but first k is uphill as others on here will know, so it takes a while to get properly comfortable running. Back down the hill and legs working properly, pushed hard second lap and felt like I was flying. 19.48
Total 1.05.31
91/411
AG 8/36
Reference time for AG winner is a ridiculous 53.48 :o :o :o

Overall happy, but not over the moon :)

Great race, within a minute of your course PB is pretty consistent and top ten in AG too. Well done :D
Maybe if the other swimmers are hacking you off, perhaps trying to have a word in their shell like prior to the start about lane etiquette and it is faster for them to let others go past as they might end up wasting time due to them being winded by another swimmer. ;)

Cheers Jon. I might start developing a flailing arm and an unusual kick.,

Well done Jim, I plan on doing the Midland series plus this one next year - body permitting.

Could be worth changing your expected swim time next entry, gets you in with the faster swimmers and away from the breaststrokers, it may mean that you have to give way, but at least they will be passing you quickly so you will lose little time.

Could be time for a smackdown with you and King Sad in 2016 ????

Game on Gav!

I think you are right about the time, I did this one with a couple of mates so the time was a compromise so we all started together (I encourage friends who are worse swimmers than me to do tris!) and think I could put a quicker one down.....and have more of a lie in ;)

Agree. Do this!

Very consistent performances over the years. And a top ten. Excellent work, sir!
I had fun once. It was awful.

Ah Jimba - well done, pity about the swimmers, always a contention.

Yes 2016 will be on the plan ... have pity on this old man :(
It seemed like a good idea at the time :? .
