The Southwell Last Minute is a very popular event, 500 entrants and attracts a wide range of participant from first timers to uber racers from all over the Midlands and beyond. It is a re-run of the Southwell Tri and is very unforgiving, it is a short sharp course where not a second can be lost without it costing dearly. The town itself is quite nice being famous for the Cathedral and gee gee race course

PB for the original course 1:06:36
PBs
Swim 9.16
T1 55s
Bike 32.25
T2 51s
Run 22.43

Excuses: … none, got a telling off by CCS last time so 100% fit, trained and prepped … honest.

Checked the startlist, recognised the names of 3 big hitters, others didn’t ring any bells … ooh possibility of a 4th spot.

Swim:
Splashed up and down for 16 lengths, got out and ran to T1. Exited without any undue tiredness and actually felt quite good.
Time; 9.45, PB 9.16. Explains why I felt quite relaxed, 2nd in AG! 197/407 finishers

T1:
No dramas, long run to mount line
Time 57s, PB 55s

Bike:
Long run through transition to mount point, foot into right shoe (no fancy leaping about and crashing into barriers here) push off, left foot in, do up straps all within 25m or so as then sharp left onto the road and up the hill heading SW’ish. Wind was supposed to be from ESE but seemed to be from the E as a twig detached itself from a tree and hit me on the head as if the wind was blowing toward me but did not feel like a head wind.

First 1k is up the hill. 30m climb, about 4% 20’ish kph, between 16.9-28.8kph.

Next 2k uppy downy +/- 16m, averaging about 40kph, low 11.5, high 54.7

3-5km; uppy downy +/- 15m, nice n fast, averaging about 45kph, low 25.9, high 57.6
5-8.8km (turnaround at Lowdham roundabout), level, steady 36-38kph, got passed by a peleton, twig incident, roundabout navigation was perfect, no stopping or dodgy moments.

Out leg time 15.17 :D ; time when I set my bike PB 16.20 (think there was a headwind then).

8.8-12km; 33-36.7kph. Just after turn around and heading back a SWB Landrover emerged from a side road in front of me. If there was any intelligent thought process involved probably on lines of ‘ooh a bicycle, they aren't fast, I’ll be alight’. Possibly yes if it was a sit up and beg with a wicker basket but a carbon fibre missile travelling at 35kph and accelerating … dick  . Braked, slowed to 23kph, exhorted the driver to make haste rapidly which he did … gradually. Uneventful ride to 12km, short climb through Thurgaston.

12-14km; uppy downy, mainly uppy, 30s, 11.5, 39.6, 15.5, 43.2

14-16km; uppy downy, mainly uppy. Three slower riders some distance in front riding abreast, tried shouting at them to move the f*** out the way  when I got overtaken by a bus which promptly slowed to a crawl because of them, I had to brake whilst climbing!! :o  After a minute or so they started their descent and went into single file, bus cleared off and I got back into the race muttering “f******* idiots  as I passed them as I accelerated to 54.4kph into the final leg.

Drop down into Southwell, behind bus and other vehicles but no big drama, Flick right on the run to dismount, feet out of shoes but no time for moving step off, so just stopped and stepped off.

Return leg time 18.20, when I set my PB 16.02

Time; 33.38, PB 32.25 (reckon without bus could have beaten my bike PB, bum)
94/407, 4th in AG :D

T2:
Long run in
Time; 59s PB 51s

Run;
Out of T2, across grass onto Park Lane, up the hill (25m ascent) feeling really good, onto the top out to turnaround, back, striding it out down the hill onto the grass … yowza, feeling damn good :D . Up the hill again, pushing it out, I say, this is good :D . Down the hill again, pushing all the way to the line. Completely spent.
Time; 21.22, PB 22.43 :D
118/407. 2nd in AG :D

Overall time
1.06.41 PB 1.06.36 Happy boy :D
94/407 Happy boy :D
2nd in AG Very happy boy :D :D

Fantastic result and well deserved, you must know the course like the back of your hand now :D

The joy of racing is the unknown, the buses, the idiots on bikes, the landrovers, was it a Defender or a Series I,II,IIa, III or did you not pay that much notice ;)

Well done again :D :D

Great result, well done!

I think 4 out of my last 5 events have been on closed roads, certainly don't miss having to contend with cars!

It was a Series LR SWB, off white, 2 occupants male and female, late 50's 60's

John, quite right, the 'what if's' of racing and no way of knowing what the other racers encountered as well - still annoying though :D

Closed road would be good :D very few over in the UK though, too many NIMBYs plus I believe very expensive
