Every day in May 2013

Postby Jack Hughes » 01 May 2013 08:16

The challenge: Run 5k (at least) every day in May. That's 31 consecutive runs. Simple?

I currently managed about 4 per month.
Analysis of my training log over the last 4 years shows that if I run 9 or more in a month, run terminating injury follows.

The most I have ever run is 11 times in a month. Distance and intensity doesn't really seem to factor. Just the number.

This isn't about fitness, but about the technical management of getting my body round without breaking down. I suspect it is possible if I go slowly enough (despite what the numbers say about intensity, I think I never really run slowly enough to get through). Time management is also an issue, especially with working days stretching from 6am to 9pm quite often.

The rough strategy is to try to run about 5:30 - 6:00/km pace for the first week. 28+ mins for each 5k.

But really I want to negative split the month, getting the average time up. Not sure what the progression would be, 28, 26, 25, 24 might around the mark.

The idea is to do a park run every week at a slightly higher instensity. (e.g 25, 24, 23, 22).

As the 31st of May is a Friday, I am hoping to get to the 1st of June, and then have a go for it run, and try to set a year's best time. Currently 22:10 I think is the time to beat.

1/31 done

00:28:32 on the garmin
00:27:53 on the phone

Fine weather, no wind and a nice grassy route up the side of the Thames. If they are all like this it will be easy.

Ankles a bit sore. Knee hurt a bit after I stopped. Probably just cold. Now for some stretching!

Right calf feels like it's been kicked.

All good!

Interesting to hear about the mental aspect as well as the physical, how much the psychological side takes its toll. Good work.

I ought to have a pin the tail on the donkey competition, to guess where I will be running next!

That's already be done. 15 has been wagered. And 31.

Basically, indicate your guess by donating that Many pounds for each run. Or make clear your units in the comments field. :)

I like the success-based funding approach. A pound from me for each finished run, then.

I'm hoping to spend £31 - good luck.

#2 Even hotter than the previous day. Lost focus (too busy thinking about work, which I had been since about 2:30am) and messed the pace up, much too quick. 24 mins and something on the phone. Oh well, it's mistakes that make it interesting. A least I finished on a course record for my Cookham 5k! Anyone who guessed "1" is now out!

More guestimates of when I will break coming in: Day 5, Day 14, and half way through Day 16. Lots of opportunities still left! A few are holding out for the 31 (although I want to finish with a flourish on the 32nd one :)

Needed to do the run at 6:30 as had a long drive - left work at 18:00 arrived home for 23:00.

Run #3

Postby Jack Hughes » 03 May 2013 12:06

Day off today - using up last year's leave. Ho hum.

Back in the hills - so the pace was going to be a lot slower, and I was trying to run slowly, anyway. Except when I remembered that there was a strava segment coming up. New PR but only managed to get 2nd place. 6 seconds off the leader. Something to aim for later on.

A bit tired and dehydrated from the previous day. In those circumstances, all I need to do is do some exercise to get a migraine. Felt it coming on a bit after getting back from a walk which I did immediately after. Drank a load of water and laid in a dark room for 45 mins or so. Hopefully that has limited the damage as I need to do some work now.

I've last run 3 times in a row in November 2011. Just before picking up a major injury. Oh well.

A fourth run in a row will be unprecedented in modern times. Should be a bit more intense tomorrow (doing everything at 6:00/km would be too easy. probably), as it is Park Run day. Sensible me says stick to 25 mins. Not so sensible me says pick a pacing strategy that starts off slowly, but builds at the end to go under 23. We shall see.

Slowly, slowly, catchee monkey.

Or run like you stole something, treat it as a mental exercise, no matter how good you feel, you must stick to a rigid pace, will competitive you, get the better of sensible you. Can't wait to find out.
